Fitting in

There is a certain discomfort in being multiracial and the confusion about which space one “fits into.” After talking with other multiracial peers, I decided to do a series describing my relationship with being multiracial.

This shoot focuses on my personal experiences with what it feels like to be a white-passing Polynesian woman. I wore a traditional Hawaiian muumuu to demonstrate the juxtaposition between my appearance and my heritage.

This piece is not meant to be a statement of “woe is me,” but more of a discussion of the discomfort that comes with feeling a connection with my heritage but also feeling a lack of a right to claim it.
